Taiwan police cannot decide whether to treat it as an extremely clever act of stealing or an even clever. Either way, it could be the perfect crime (犯罪),because the criminals are birds –

horning pigeons!

The crime begins with a telephone message to the owner of a stolen car ; if you want the car back, pay up .Then, the car owner is directed to a park, told where to find a bird cage and how to attach money to the neck of the pigeon inside . Carrying the money in a tiny bag , the pigeon flew off .

There have been at least four such pigeon pick-ups in Changwa. What at first seemed like the work of a clever stay-at-home car thief, however , may in face be the work of an even lazier and more inventive criminal mind—one that avoids not only collecting money but going out to steal the car in the first place. Police officer Chen says that the criminal probably has pulled a double trick: he gets money for things he cannot possibly return. Instead of stealing cars, he lets someone else do it and then waits for the car-owner to place an ad(启事)in the newspaper asking for help .

The theory is supported by the fact that , so far, none

of the stolen cars have been returned . Also, the amount of money demanded-under 3,000 Taiwanese dollars –seems too little for a car worth many times more .

Demands for pigeon-delivered money stopped as soon as the press reported the story. And even if they start again, Chen holds little hope of catching the criminal . “We have more important things to do, ” he said .

56.After the car owner received a phone call, he________. A.went to a certain pigeon and put some money in the bag it carried B.gave the money to the thief and had his car back in a park C.sent some money to the thief by mail D.told the press about it

57.The “lazier and more inventive” criminal refers to _______. A.the car thief who stays at home B.one of those who put the ads in the paper C.one of the policemen in Changwa D.the owner of the pigeons 58.The writer mentions the fact that “none of the stolen cars have been returned” to show ____ . A.how easily people get fooled by criminals B.what Chen thinks might be correct C.the thief is extremely clever D.the money paid is too little

59.The underlined word “they” in the last paragraph refers to ______. A.criminals B.pigeons C.the stolen cars D.demands for money

60.We may infer from the text that the criminal knows how to reach the car owners because _____. A.he reads the ads in the newspaper B.he lives in the same neighborhood

C.he has seen the car owners in the park D.he has trained the pigeons to follow them

Proper arrangement of classroom space is important to encouraging interaction. Most of us have noticed how important physical setting is to efficiency and comfort in our work. College classroom space should be designed to encourage the activity of critical thinking.

We have entered the 21 st century, but step into almost any college classroom and you step back in time at least a hundred years. Desks are normally in straight rows, so students can clearly see the teacher but not all their classmates. This assumption behind such an arrangement is obvious:Everything of importance comes from the teacher.

With a little imagination and effort, unless desks are fixed to the floor, the teacher can correct this situation and create space that encourages interchange among students. In small or standard- size classes, chairs, desks, and tables can be arranged in a variety of ways. The primary goal should be for everyone to be able to see everyone else. Large classes, particularly those held in lecture halls, unfortunately, allow much less flexibility.

Arrangement of the classroom should also make it easy to divide students into small groups for discussion or problem-solving exercises. Small classes with movable desks and tables present no problem. Even in large lecture halls,it is possible for students to turn around and form groups of four to six. Breaking a class into small groups provides more opportunities for students to interact with each other, think out loud, and see how other students’ thinking processes operate--all essential elements in developing new modes of critical thinking.

In courses that regularly use a small group format(形式,布局),students might be asked to stay in the same small groups throughout the course. A colleague of mine allows students to move around during the first two weeks, until they find a group they are comfortable with. John then asks them to stay in the same seat, with the same group, from that time on. This not only creates a comfortable setting for interaction but helps him learn students’ names and faces. 61.The primary purpose of desk rearrangement is . A.for the teacher to divide students into small groups. B.to make it possible for students to interact with each other. C.for the teacher to find out how students think. D.to give students more opportunities to practice speaking.

62.The expression “step back in time at least a hundred years” in Paragraph 2 is intended to convey the idea that . A.there is not much change in educational idea over the past hundred years B.critical thinking was encouraged even a century ago C.college classrooms often remind people of their college life D.a hundred years ago, desk arrangement in a classroom was quite different

63.The greatest advantage in allowing each student to find his own group might be that A.learning is made comfortable in this way B.the teacher can easily remember students’ names and faces C.the teacher saves the trouble in doing that D.brighter students can help slower ones. .It is implied in the passage that . A.students are allowed to changed groups throughout the course in John’s class

B.classroom interaction between students is essential to the teachers C.a comfortable environment leads to higher working efficiency D.new kinds of desks and chairs should be made

65.The author mentioned John in the last paragraph in order to A.create a comfortable setting for interaction B.introduce and approach of learning student’s names and faces easily C.give an example that students stay in the same seat throughout the course. D.describe a good seat – arrangement mode in courses with small group format.

As China develops, the Internet’s presence is inescapable (必然发生的). But some get addicted to the Internet. 13 – year old Xiao Yi paid the high price for his. His suicide note explained he wanted to enter another life to meet the characters from the online games he played constantly, sometimes days in a row. “He had a kind of fixation.” Xiao Yi’s father says, “He threw himself into an imaginary world.”

Internet addiction got attention in China when stories such as Xiao Yi’s popped up in China state – run press. Internet addicts died from exhaustion after spending days online or murdered others in search of virtual (虚幻的) possessions. Public anger over these incidents spurred the opening of China’s first Internet addiction treatment center.

The clinic’s treatment might seem cruel. But it’s a popular choice for worried parents.

“Ever since our door’s opened, every bed has been full.” Says the center’s director. 20 at a time come for medical treatment and counseling. They are also kept busy with activities, designed to take their attention away from the attraction of computers.

“I’m confident this will work or I wouldn’t have come here,” explains this college student. Critics aren’t so sure. Dog owners, who have noticed that their four – legged friend seems equally delighted to see them after five minutes away as five hours, may wonder if animals can tell how much time passes. Newly published research from The University of Western Ontario may bring us closer to answering that very question. William Roberts and his colleagues found that rats are able to keep track of how much time has passed since they discovered a piece of cheese, be it a little or a lot ,but they don’t actually form memories of when the discovery occurred .That is ,the rats can’t place the memories in time.

The research team designed an experiment in which rats visited the ‘arms’ of a maze(迷宫) at different times of day. Some arms contained common desirable food, and one arm contained a highly desirable piece of cheese .Rats were later returned to the maze with the cheese removed on certain trials and replaced with something else. All told ,three groups of rates were tested in the research using three varying cues (提示,暗示): when , how long ago or when plus how long ago. Only the cue of how long ago food was encountered(偶遇)was used successfully by the rats. These results , the researchers say ,suggest that episodic(片段的)memory in rats is quite different from human episodic memory ,which involves exact memory of the point in past time when as event occurred. “The rats remember whether they did something ,such as stored food a few hours or five days ago,” explained Roberts. “The more time that has passed ,the weaker the memory may be. Rats may learn to follow different courses of action using weak and strong memory traces as cues ,thus responding differently depending on how long ago an event occurred .However , they do not remember that the event occurred at a specific point in past time.” “This research,” said Roberts , “supports the theory I introduced that animals are stuck in time, with no sense of time extending into the past or future.”

71.The research team found . A.rat’s memory has no difference from human’s B.rats can remember all the events in the past C.animals are stuck in time with little idea of past or future D.rats have sense of time extending into the past or future 72.Put into a maze ,rats can remember . A.when they encounter the cheese

B.how long ago they encounter the cheese C.where the cheese is D.which “arms” they have been to 73.The test shows that . A.the more time has passed ,the stronger the rats’ memory may be B.rats can keep track of the time when the discovery occurred C.the cue of how long ago the discovery occurred works well on rat’s memory D.dog owners still can’t know if animals can tell how much time passes 74.Which column may this passage appear in a magazine? A.Science. B.Health. C.Sports. D.Business. 75.From the passage ,we can know that . A.episodic memory in rats is based on when not how long ago B.humans can place the memories in time C.human episodic memory is similar to rats’ D.only rats have no sense of time extending into past and future

Do you want to work with people or animals or machines or tools? Do you want to work indoors or outdoors, directly serve people in need or serve people behind the scenes? These are the typical questions that a volunteer service agency would ask.

Every year, thousands and thousands of people in the

west offer volunteer services. Volunteering greatly strengthens the community partly because it helps the old, the young, the weak, the sick, the disabled and the injured to overcome difficulties.

. They may give people advice, offer friendship to the young, drive the elderly to church, counsel(劝告) kids against drugs, work as an assistant in a school or nursing home, raise funds, plant trees, help out in local libraries and do many other things.

Volunteering can be a few hours a week or a few hours a month, time during the day, evenings or weekends, either part time or full time. Anybody who is willing to serve people in need can become a volunteer.

The art of volunteering is a process of both giving and receiving. Volunteering allows volunteers to meet new people and make new friends and mix with people from all walks of life. Volunteering is an excellent way to experiment, practice and try out new techniques and skills. It is much more effective to practice a skill than to read about it or study it in a classroom. Volunteering is a great way to develop good teamwork skills, discover your individual talents and explore career choices. Being a volunteer takes individuals(个人) on a wonderful journey and helps them learn many important things beyond their school learning. 76.What is the best title of the passage? (Please answer within 10 words.)

Recently our class held a discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of newspapers and websites.

Some students think newspapers are still the most popular means of getting information, and newspapers are easy to carry, so people can enjoy them at any time and place. Besides, the information people get through the Internet is usually unbelievable because everybody can issue news on the Internet.

However some students who support the Internet think the Internet contains various information and compared with newspapers, it is more attractive to people. And the information from the net is the latest. Nowadays people are used to getting information through the Internet.

In my option, both of the ideas are reasonable. And we can’t say which media is better. They are both the means of getting information and knowing about the world for us and are the most popular media in our life. 评分原则

But I’m not sure if I can keep up with their speaking speed. What should I do if someone asks me a question but I can’t understand?

That happens to everyone at the English corner. You can ask that person to say it again. I get shy when I still can’t understand.

In that case, he or she will try to explain the question to you. You are expected to do the same when you ask someone a question and he can’t understand. Text 9

You’ve been sick quite a bit since you got here, haven’t you?

Well, for the past few weeks, the weather in this city has been changing a lot. Not matter what I put on, I’m never dressed properly for the day. I believe that’s the reason I’m often sick.

Many newcomers have the same trouble. It takes a while to get used to the weather. I know. It’s just a period of time, and it’s hard to get through.

I heard that there’s a weather hotline you can call in the morning. It will tell you the temperature for the day.

Yes, I think I’ve heard of that hotline.

I’d like to find out if it really helps. Maybe you can give them a call tomorrow morning and see if it helps your situation. Text 10

And now here are some of the things you can listen to this evening here on Radio 2. Our Wednesday play is at 9:00 and it is called “Old People Talking”. It’s about a small group of retired workers sitting in a social club remembering the past. Before that at 7:30 we have “My Favourite Musician” in which Uenny Lindley talks about the records that had an effect on her musical career. At 10:30 there is a talk by James Farmer of his travels in the Middle East by bicycle. On Radio 3 the big event of the evening is the broadcast of La Traviata from the Albert Hall at 8:00. The talk at 10:15 is Peter Morris remembering his adventures while fishing in Scotland. Radio 1 has the usual continuous pop music; from 6:00 to 8:00 it’s the “Tommy Brian Show” with talks with ceveral pop stars from North America; from 10:00 till midnight it’s the American country music show. So if you’re in for the evening or listening on the car radio there should be something for you to listen to.
