Part Ⅲ Reading Comprehension (30 marks)
Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage. A
Kite flying is the sport of sending up into the air by means of the wind , a light frame covered with paper, plastic or cloth. The frame can be one of many different shapes and is attached to a long string held in the hand or wound on a drum. Kites have a long history of practical application and many different types of kite have been developed to serve various purposes.
The ancient Chinese used bird-kites to carry ropes across rivers and valleys. The current folding kite which will dive excitingly is an improved type of such a kite. With its long flat body and single pair of bird-like wings, it looks just like a large bird in the air. The modern version is usually made of tissue-paper rather than the traditional silk.
Man-lifting kites were developed in ancient times, again by the Chinese, for getting information from walled cities and army camps. In fact , as recently as the Second World War, German U-boats flew kites from their towers to lift people into the air to watch the land. These kites, which are no longer in existence, were made of light-weight cloth. They were much larger and stronger than the Chinese ones. Their design, however, was simply that of the cutter kite. Smaller in size, this type of kite is still very popular as a toy for children, being easy to make with a diamond-shaped frame, no wings and brown-paper covering.
Box-kites are another type of kite found in toy shops today. The first box-kite, named for its box-like body, was developed in the nineteenth century to test theories of flight and this type of cotton-covered kite greatly assisted the success of early aeroplane. These kites are the ancestors of a heavier version of the box-kite, which consists of two main sections, placed side by side. Developed for the peacetime purpose of fishing in strong sea wind, it is the only modern kite described which has practical value. A long-lasting plastic material has to be used for this kite, which carries fishing lines.
56. The ancient Chinese bird-kites were usually made of light frames covered with_____.
A. silk B. paper C. cloth D. plastic 57. The kites used by German U-boats in World War II for the military purpose were made of ____.
A. brown paper B. plastic material C. light-weight cloth D. traditional silk
58. The ancient Chinese man-lifting kites were used_____.
A. to carry ropes across rivers and valleys B. for the military purpose C. as toy for children D. for fishing in strong sea wind 59. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

B. Box-kites contribute to the success of early aeroplane. C. The cutter kite has a diamond-shaped body but no wings.

A year ago August, Dave Fuss lost his job driving a truck for a small company in west Michigan. His wife, Gerrie, was still working in the local school cafeteria, but work for Dave was scarce, and the price of everything was rising. The Fusses were at risk of joining the millions of Americans who have lost their homes in recent years. Then Dave and Gerrie received a timely gift — $ 7,000, a legacy (遗产) from their neighbors Ish and Arlene Hatch, who died in an accident. “It really made a difference when we were going under financially.” says Dave.
But the Fusses weren’t the only folks in Alto and the neighboring town of Lowell to receive unexpected legacy from the Hatches. Dozens of other families were touched by the Hatches’ generosity. In some cases, it was a few thousand dollars; in others, it was more than $100,000.
It surprised nearly everyone that the Hatches had so much money, more than $3 million — they were an elderly couple who lived in an old house on what was left of the family farm.
Children of the Great Depression, Ish and Arlene were known for their habit of saving. They thrived on (喜欢) comparison shopping and would routinely go from store to store, checking prices before making a new purchase.
Through the years, the Hatches paid for local children to attend summer camp when their parents couldn’ t afford it. “Ish and Arlene never asked if you needed anything.” says their friend Sandy Van Weelden, “They could see things they could do to make you happier, and they would do them.”
Even more extraordinary was that the Hatches had their farmland distributed. It was the Hatches’ wish that their legacy — a legacy of kindness as much as one of dollars and cents —should enrich the whole community (社区) and last for next generations.
Neighbors helping neighbors — that was Ish and Arlene Hatch’ s story. 61. According to the text, the Fusses ________.
A. were employed by a truck company B. were in financial difficulty C. worked in a school cafeteria D. lost their home 62. Which of the following is true of the Hatches?
A. They had their children during the Great Depression. B. They left the family farm to live in an old house. C. They gave away their possessions to their neighbors. D. They helped their neighbors to find jobs.
63. Why would the Hatches routinely go from store to store?
A. They decided to open a store. B. They wanted to save money. C. They couldn’t afford expensive things. D. They wanted to buy gifts for local kids.
. According to Sandy Van Weelden, the Hatches were________.
A. understanding B. optimistic C. cold-hearted D. pessimistic 65. What can we learn from the text?
A. The community of Alto was poor. B. The summer camp was attractive to the parents.
C. Sandy Van Weelden got a legacy from the Hatches.
D. The Hatches would like the neighbors to follow their example.

Whenever I see anyone buying a National Lottery ticket, I want to stop them and ask if they know just where their money is going.
The lottery money is supposed to go to charity, but it makes me angry to see some of the so-called “good causes” that it’s being used to support. Also, Camelot, the organizers, have made a profit of £10.8 million in five months. We hear that a lot of that money is boosting(increasing) the pay packets of the company’s bosses.
For the past 10 years I’ve been helping to raise funds for a cancer research charity called Tenovus. My husband, Sandy, died from cancer 11 years ago when he

was only 51. There’s been a long line of deaths in our family through cancer and it’s been destructive. I’ve also lost two sisters-in-law, my brother, Michael, my father-in-law and my father. That’s apart from several close friends
The charity is 50 years old now and raises money mainly for breast cancer research. It also runs a support line for the families of cancer sufferers. Our local group raises£3 million and half that money came from sales of our own lottery tickets at supermarkets. But our income has dropped by half since the National Lottery was introduced.
I’m not against people playing the National Lottery, but they should think about what they’re doing. The chances of winning the cumulative amount of money are so small; they might as well throw their money away. The Government tells us that the proceeds (收益)are going to things like the arts and sports, but what about the National Health Service? They should give some cash to that, too. How can they justify spending ridiculous amounts of cash on so-called works of art like display of potatoes or buying up Winston Churchill’s papers at a cost of£12 million?
So who really are the winners in the National Lottery? When I think of all that money people could be donating to cancer research, I could weep. It’s time people realized how charities across the country are suffering because of the National Lottery. It’s disappointing and so frustrating.
66. The reason why the writer raises funds for cancer research is that ________. A. she herself is suffering from cancer B. the cancer is the most frightening disease
C. a number of her relatives died of cancer
D. some cancer research needs more money that other research 67. In this text the writer is expressing _________.
A. her personal opinions B. the opinions of the general sufferers C. her feelings about cancer sufferers D. some ideas of fund-raising 68. The organization “Tenovus” is _________.
A. run by a group of people in the writer’s town
B. a charity organization which has some local groups
C. set up to collect money for people who lose their relatives D. set up to assist the National Lottery 69. The writer seems to hope that _________.
A. people will spend more money on the National Lottery B. people will give more money to charity
C. most of the lottery money will go to charity
D. most of the lottery money will be used for cancer research 70. What’s the writer’s attitude toward the National Lottery? A. The writer is enthusiastically supporting the National Lottery. B. The writer has objections to the National Lottery.
C. The writer believes that the lottery money should be used for cancer research. D. The writer is just expressing her feelings about collecting money for charity.
Part Ⅳ Writing (45 marks) Section A (10 marks)
Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer. Do we need an “Ivy (常春藤) League”?
China may soon have its own “Ivy League”, with a union of top universities.
The term originally referred to an athletic conference of eight top universities in the northeastern US. The Chinese version, which was
officially started in mid-October, consists of nine famous universities, including Peking, Tsinghua, Zhejiang and Fudan. The union is supposed to result in student exchange programs, recognition of academic achievements, and other joint programs.
The news of this Chinese “Ivy League” has received mixed responses from the public and press. Some negative critics have dismissed it as yet another example

of the wishful copying of international practices without fully understanding them. Others say that the “Ivy League” is not necessary but that the union is a good idea, one that could promote academic development.
So what’s your opinion on a Chinese “Ivy League”? Do we need one?
Yes. Ivy League or not, nine of China’s best universities cooperating is a good thing.
1. These universities combining resources could create a better environment for students and for research. It could also save a lot of time and resources because it would mean fewer unnecessary investments for some of the universities.
2. Allowing students to move to or have exchanges with other universities could broaden their horizons, improve their social skills and create more employment opportunities. The results could be more important than lessons and achievements.
3. The term “Ivy League” carries a sense of academic excellence, tradition and reputation. If borrowing such a term could encourage students’ and professors’ mental state and improve Chinese higher education, then there’s no reason not to do it.
No. Universities should do some work on increasing cooperation instead of copying an “Ivy League” model.
1. Many Chinese universities already have such cooperation with each other. If this cooperation were associated with the “Ivy League”, it would just distract (分散) attention and resources and have a negative effect.
2. These Chinese universities are all state-run and most get their funding from the government. They’re quite similar to each other in many ways and more cooperation wouldn’t bring about as much potential ability as between , say, public and private, or Chinese and foreign universities.
3. China should find its own way to develop world-class universities instead of by copying some foreign practices. We have our own unique conditions and foreign lessons often don’t apply well here.

A brand is a name, word, sign, symbol, design, or a combination of these, intended to identify the goods or services of a company or a group of companies. Another purpose of a brand is to contrast one company from another. The most important skill of professional marketers is the ability to create, maintain, protect, and enhance (增强) the brands of their products and services. Branding has become so important that today hardly any company or product is without one. Therefore, brand management is an increasingly important element in marketing. Brand power refers to the relative strength of a company’s brand in the minds of consumers, and can influence consumers’ choice of products. Brands are powerful to the extent that they give high brand loyalty and strong brand associations, name recognition, perceived quality and other assets (资产) to a company. A strong brand can be one of a company’s most important assets. High brand power provides a company with many competitive advantages. A powerful brand enjoys a high level of consumer brand awareness and loyalty. Because consumers expect stores to carry the brand, the company has more bargaining power when negotiating with retailers (零售商). And because the brand name brings high credibility (可信度), a company with a strong brand can more easily launch new products with the same brand name.
Many companies use the advantage of a strong brand power strategically to expand their business. When a company introduces an additional item with a new flavour, form, colour or package size in a given product category and under the same brand name, it is called a line extension. Another strategy is called brand extension. This involves the use of a successful brand name to launch new or modified products in a new category, therefore employing brand recognition in order to increase sales of new products.
Brand recognition is certainly important. Because consumers often hold long-standing perceptions about brands, high brand power ensure a company continues sales of its products.
