On Friday morning when 53-year-old Thong Pham broke into the house through the unlocked back door, he took a steak knife from the kitchen.
It was dark, and the family didn't know what Marley was barking (吠) at. Taylor, Amber and their girls Finley, 6,and Sadie, 4, soon woke up and came downstairs, too. “Well, it was dark so we couldn't see anything, only could hear Marley,” Amber recalled, saying her husband then went for the lights. “And once he turned the hall light on, we realized that the guy was holed up in the corner trying to hide.”
“So I think he got to the front door and realized he couldn't get out, and by that point in time, Marley's got him cornered,”Taylorsaid. Pham slashed (砍) both Marley and Taylor, and blood went everywhere. Taylor shared a video summary to his page, where he said Marley was stabbed (刺) up to six times, mostly around the head and neck area. “And as I pulled back, blood shot out of my arm,”Taylorcontinued. “She got him pretty good and I got him pretty good in the face.”
“But it was really hard because I was trying to make sure that my husband wasn't going to die,” Amber explained, adding that she was trying to protect their two girls. “When he realized that the two girls were in the house, that's when he kind of backed up and started running. \"
Taylorexpressed gratitude to everyone for their thoughts and prayers. And the family is thankful for their dog Marley.
“She's our hero,” Amber said. “If it hadn't been for her, that guy could have gone in the...he could have gone to their rooms or something.”Tayloradded, “Yeah, I mean, the story plays out very differently if Marley's not there.”
1. Why did the family come downstairs before daybreak? A. To stop a break-in. B. To lock the back door. C. To check on Marley. D. To turn the hall light on. 2. What happened during the fight? A. Pham dug a hole in the corner. B. Marley was injured but bit back.

Scientists have recently discovered thatAndean condors (秀鹫)— some of the world’s largest birds——barely flap their wings at all while flying. Instead, they use rising air currents to remain in the air for hours.
The Andean condor is the world’s largest soaring bird. They can weigh up to 15 kilograms. Their wings, when spread out, measure up to three meters. Their main food source is the meat of large animals which have died. Soaring high in the sky allows condors to easily spot possible meals on the ground.
Scientists worked together to study the flight patterns of these huge birds and how much effort the birds use when flying. To study the birds while they were in the sky, the researchers attached special devices which could record every beat of their wings.
The scientists learned that most of the condors’ flapping— over 75%— came when the birds were taking off. Once in the sky, the birds flew for very long periods of time without flapping at all. In fact, they only flapped their wings for 1% of the time they were in the air. One bird flew for over five hours without flapping, covering nearly 117miles.
Soaring without flapping is important because birds bum energy every time they flap their wings.
The birds’ soaring isn’t magic. They use the fact that hot air rises to keep themselves up. As hot air rises, it often creates “thermals”— currents of warm air moving upward. The condors soar by making use of these thermals. The tricky part is finding thermals and moving between them.
When birds are forced to land and take off again often, it costs them a lot of energy. The researchers learned that to avoid having to land, the condors did most of their non-take-off flapping when they were closer to the ground and looking for a new thermal.
The scientists reported that even though all of the condors they studied were young, they knew well how to take advantage of the air currents.
4. What can we learn about the Andean condor from the text? A. They live mairly on small animals. B. Their wingspan is at least three meters. C. They rely on hot air to remain high in the sky.
D. They are the birds with the strongest flying ability. 5. Why was the equipment tied to the birds? A. To measure how far they could fly without flapping. B. To keep track of how often they flapped while flying. C. To calculate the energy required for their flight. D. To confirm their flight patterns.
6. Which of the following acts consumes the most energy for a condor? A. Hunting for food. B. Flying in the sky.
C. Getting off the ground. D. Landing on the ground. 7. What can we infer from the text?
A. Condors flap the most when looking for a new thermal. B. No condor can fly for more than five hours without flapping. C. Condors don’t need to look for thermals when soaring in the sky. D. Soaring by using thermals is probably a natural ability of condors.

The far side of the moonis a strange and wild region, quite different from the familiar and mostly smooth face we see nightly from our planet. Soon this rough space will have even stranger features: it will be crowded with radio telescopes.
Astronomers are planning to make the moon's distant side our newest and best window on the cosmic(宇宙的) dark ages, a mysterious era hiding early marks of stars and galaxies. Our universe was not always filled with stars. About 380,000 years after the big bang, the universe cooled, and the first atoms of hydrogen formed. Gigantic hydrogen clouds soon filled the universe. But for a few hundred million years, everything remained dark, without stars. Then came the cosmic dawn: the first stars flickered, galaxies came into existence and slowly the universe's largescale structure took shape.
The seeds of this structure must have been present in the darkage hydrogen clouds, but the era has been impossible toprobeusing optical(光学的) telescopes—there was no light. And although this hydrogen produced longwavelength(or lowfrequency) radio emissions, radio telescopes on Earth have found it nearly impossible to detect them. Our atmosphere either blocks or disturbs these faint signals; those that get through are drowned out by humanity's radio noise.
Scientists have dreamed for decades of studying the cosmic dark ages from the moon's far side. Now multiple
space agencies plan lunar missions carrying radiowavedetecting instruments—some within the next three years—and astronomers' dreams are set to become reality.
“If I were to design an ideal place to do lowfrequency radio astronomy, I would have to build the moon,”says astrophysicist Jack Burns of the University of Colorado Boulder. “We are just now finally getting to the place where we're actually going to be putting these telescopes down on the moon in the next few years.” 8. What's the purpose of building radio telescopes on the moon? A To research the big bang. B. To discover unknown stars.
C. To study the cosmic dark ages. D. To observe the far side of the moon. 9. What does the underlined word “probe” in Paragraph 3 possibly mean? A. Explore. B. Evaluate. C. Produce. D. Predict.
10. Hydrogen radio emissions can't be detected on Earth because ________. A. there was no light in the dark ages
B. they cannot possibly get through our atmosphere C. gigantic hydrogen clouds no longer fill the universe D. radio signals on Earth cause too much interference
11. What can we infer from theunderlined sentence in the last paragraph? A. Scientists have to rebuild the moon. B. We will finally get to the moon's distant side. C. The moon is a perfect place to set up radio telescopes. D. A favorable research environment will be found on the moon.
